1. aMaze!
Applications / Games

Rating 3.2/5 (32 votes)

I was prepared for a minor let-down when I installed this app. Afterall, Labyrinth was fun, but oh-so-limited. Its potential wasn't realized until you paid, and honestly, it wasn't worth the price, in my opinion. Turns out the let down is MAJOR. This app gives you 10 fair quality levels, then stiffs you with the punchline. "That'll be $9 please." I'm all for developers doing what it takes to put food on the table...

There's been plenty of buzz over this new Accelerometer-based game for the iPhone/iPod Touch. So much that dozens of videos cropped up on YouTube shortly after its release. While at first glance, this game seems remarkable, it quickly, very quickly loses it's lustre. The game begins with a series of menus that allow you to choose a variety of options. All of these lead you to a panoramic view of a car (if you can cal...

The moment I saw this app, I wanted it. It looked impressive. What is it? Its a band. In your pocket. (At least, that's how it looks on paper, and in the grainy resolution of Youtube...) Videos for this app came out several days prior to its release. In them, a very crafty finger replicated all sorts amazing feats with this application, creating tracks and dazzling us with one seemingly cool app in the process. That lone finger really made it loo...

4. MPG
Applications / Productivity

Rating 3.4/5 (26 votes)

MPG - Miles per Gallon. If you're anything like me, you keep well documented records of when you fill up, how often, where, and how much it cost you to do so. Why? This information helps you in many ways; but thats another discussion. This app is amazing for guys like me that keep track of such records. Just a few taps, and your information is stored, including fuel, trips, and service for multiple vehicles.

This one's hardly worth including, but it does get merits for being essential. Every Single iPhone/iTouch user has tinkered with settings at one point or another. Whats the point? I really don't know, but since we're stuck with this app....

Weather, the best thing since sticking your head out the window came into style! This application falls into the realm of 'somewhat handy', however it's missing a fair chunk of what makes the forecast worthwhile for me. Let's say you want to know standard weather almanac details as basic as 'How windy is it going to be today?' Weather can't tell you. So, if all you're looking for is a rundown of the most basic of weather details, then Weather is ...

YouTube. Broadcast Yourself. In all honesty, I understand the appeal of YouTube. I get it entirely, but honestly, I have yet to see a video worth sharing. I can say that many a quiet, boring evening have been spent in the glow of YouTube, but it's not my first destination online. This app brings YouTube to You. Some might argue it does so in fine style, but for me, it depends wholly on the quality of the connection you have. Since I don't use it ...

Rating 3.7/5 (25 votes)

Google Maps, wherever you are? Sah-weet. I truely love this app. Especially when I find myself in the midst of the ghetto, and I need a quick route out. It's also useful if I want to find out what's around me in the form of restaurants, gas stations, dry cleaners, Starbucks, etc.

9. Notes
Applications / Native Apps

Rating 3.2/5 (17 votes)

Notes is a useful way to keep track of, well, notes. The only prerequisite is that you know how to successfully, adeptly type on the device's keyboard. This in of itself can be quite a challenge. Regardless, I've found that notes is an excellent way to store all kinds of useful information.

It's a calculator, and it works. Nothing fancy here. 2.0 brings about the advent of an upgrade according to many sources, but since I'm not exactly plotting the trajectory of the spit-ball I fired at my boss (yet) I really have no use for it except for the occasional, random use of real life math.

PocketTouch is exactly how the iPod functionality should have been handled out of the box. To control volume, you slide your finger up or down. Left or right advances or rewinds the track. Tapping pauses or resumes the tunes. Simple yet brilliant, but that's not the extent of this gem. The settings pane reveals even more ways to 'Interact' with your jams. For example, enabling the Shaker allows you to shake the device into a random track. I just...

12. iTunes
Applications / Native Apps

Rating 3.8/5 (17 votes)

iTunes. This mobile version requires connectivity; check. It also requires an iTunes account; check. Okay, the only thing missing is the will to up and purchase music directly from my device. Now, I don't condone piracy, but $0.99 seems steep for a song, no? I guess it might save me the trouble of buying the CD, and burning it to my library... Some might dig it, I accessed it when my device was shiney and new, and haven't looked back since.

13. Photos
Applications / Native Apps

Rating 3.8/5 (13 votes)

Before I discovered this application, I was the harbringer of a flex-fold photo holder; You know, the semi-opaque plastic P.O.S. that comfortably resides in the wallet, easily increasing its already substantial girth? That's the one. This nifty app makes viewing photos a breeze. It is perhaps one of the best photo viewers in existance; regardless of platform. Some editing would be nice; crop, rotate, etc, but on the whole, this one's not bad. Not...

14. Videos
Applications / Native Apps

Rating 3.5/5 (20 votes)

In the past, I have actually gone out and obtained shows, even entire movies to play on my device. The process was as clumsy as it was time-consuming. It's not possible to just drag-drop a movie into itunes, it has to be converted first. Itunes inherent converter is hit/miss; it might work, it might not. For this reason and many more, my Videos app is quite empty, and it's likely to remain so for some time.

15. Music
Applications / Native Apps

Rating 3.4/5 (8 votes)

Music. This is where I go to access my Music, sometimes. PocketTouch has all but replaced this icon for me, however there is still a need to hit this dastardly icon on occasion. Why dastardly? My entire mp3 collection consists of one-song podcasts. These do not shuffle by default, nor do they play in order. This is a serious oversight in my humble opinion, but one that I've come to work around on a daily basis.

16. Clock
Applications / Native Apps

Rating 3.4/5 (9 votes)

What can be said about Clock? It's a world-clock, allowing you to input various time-zones to your hearts content. It's an Alarm; provided your battery doesn't die overnight (which happens QUITE often for me, given the devices limited capacity to hold a charge) It's a count-down timer, and a stop-watch. All of this is well and good, but how come I can't rename timezones to my own city? Doesn't the world revolve around me? It doesn't? Oh well.

I gotta admit, I don't use this one much. Contacts is one of the few native apps that Apple really left behind. 2.0 seeks to change all that with SIM Card Import and Contact Search, but until that time, I find Contacts to be a rather clumsy application of a contacts manager.

Calendar is a scheduler's dream. Since the advent of 1.1.2, calendar users have been able to create events on the fly, with the simple drag of thier fingers across the screen. Itunes also gives users the ability to sync calendar with entries housed within Outlook, and other plugins exist that allow users to sync Gmail Calendars, among others.

19. Safari
Applications / Native Apps

Rating 4.0/5 (22 votes)

Safari is the default browser for the iPhone/iPod Touch. It allows its users to access virtually any webpage. While it serves fairly well as a browser, it does NOT support flash. While many speculate that someday it might, the jury's out as to whether it's even possible.
